What is a Sales Professional Anyway?
Signtronix Sign Company - What is a Sales Professional Anyway?
Whether the economy is good or bad, up or down, sales jobs are always hiring. When sales fall off, that’s the time when a savvy company like Signtronix will hire more sales personnel, to keep the cash flowing. Good sales people are the lifeblood of any company. But what is a sales job, really? Many people may be mindful of a pushy guy trying to convince you to put out your hard-earned money for something you don’t really want or need, but that’s not a true sales person. A real salesman is is listening to the customer. He (or she) knows that the customer will tell you exactly what you need to know to sell them what they really do want or need. So he’s not pushing something on them that they don’t want. Rather, he’s helping them to find what they DO want.
Sadly, the days of the pushy blue-suede used car salesman are far from over. So long as there are weaker-willed people, there will be con men out there to con-vince them to agree to buy what those unscrupulous people have to sell. But that’s not a sales professional. A sales professional strives to help the customer acquire what they’re really after, and works hard to make sure that there’s never any Buyer’s Remorse, any bad feelings after the sale.
There are many kinds of sales jobs. Perhaps the most obvious and well known are the retail sales clerks, who help customers make a selection in stores. They may be trained in store policies primarily, but they also usually have some interest in the products in their section, and become even more knowledgeable on the subjects as they work in the department. This makes a sales job of that kind a great way to get more involved in a favorite interest or hobby! Cars, beds, model airplanes, toys, comic books, skis, snowboards, motorcycles — all manner of interests need sales people.
Signtronix sales jobs are business-to-business. In other words, the sales representative is calling upon other businesses, rather than retail customers. This may be for goods (like paper or other packaging supplies,) or services (such as shipping and freight consolidation, billing, collections, or other business service needs.) Sometimes the sales job involves landing an account which involves recurring sales. When that’s the case, the sales person may continue to receive commissions on those ongoing purchases as well. Other times, it’s a once (or seldom repeating) sale by design. For example, all businesses need a good quality sign, but once they have one, they may not need to upgrade it — at least not for THAT business location. Even those sorts of sales positions result in repeat business though, if the sales person has done the job well and helped the customer to get what they need, rather than just what the company has for sale.
Most sales jobs involve a commission of some sort, an incentive to close sales, rather than just standing around and collecting the base salary. Some are commission-only. In that case, the sales job is an Independent Contractor’s job, which allows more freedom than a rigid schedule can offer. No matter what, sales will always need to be made, and a sales job can be a great way to make money and feel good about what you do, if you do it right!
